The next morning, Stephen woke up and made his way into the living room to talk to Brie and found a note. Vanessa and she had gone shopping for the Christmas party decorations. Earlier in the week he gave her five hundred dollars and told her to bring him the receipts.

Sitting at the kitchen table, he glanced around amazed at the differences she made to his home. Little, subtle changes that made the place look more like a home and less like a bachelor pad.

Not only was she changing his residence, but he could sense the impression she was leaving on his heart. Last night when she refused him, he went to bed shocked. She thought he was her true love, but knowing how he felt about the statue, she wouldn't have mindless sex with him, even after he'd been hurt.

Her rejection stung, yet when he thought about it logically, he couldn't blame her. After all, he wasn't ready to settle down and say I do and she wanted forever after.

Deeply attracted to Brie, he realized he was beginning to care about her. That stupid Cupid superstition lay between them, taunting him. After his parents’ divorce, he swore to never do the dance or marry anyone who accepted that nonsense. And yet Brie believed.

No way would he gamble on the God of Love working for him. Though all his friends seemed happily married and expecting babies. Isn't that what he eventually wanted? Yet, he was interested in Brie.

What if fate had put Brie here for him and because of his history, he was hell bent on tossing everything away. Could his family situation be keeping him from happiness?

The doorbell rang and he rose maneuvering his way with his good eye.

Peeking through the peephole, he saw Ryan standing on his porch.

Quickly, he opened the door.

"Look at you," he said laughing. "You lost that round."

"Thanks for reminding me," he said, smiling. This morning the swelling had gone down some, but now the black and purple hues were starting to show. "Come on in and take a seat."

The sheriff walked in and gazed around at this house. "Hey, the place is looking great."

Was it so bad before Brie arrived?

"Brie's been cleaning," he said. "Can I get you anything?"

"Oh no, I just came by to make certain you were all right. Where is Brie?"

"She's out buying Christmas decorations."

"Everyone enjoyed her company the other night. She's nice. We wondered about the two of you meeting in the park," Ryan said, fishing for information.

His boss sank into a chair near the couch while Stephen began to walk the floor. This might be the time to confide in him about what happened with Brie.

"There's something I need to tell you that may cause you to fire me. I arrested Brie dancing naked and took her down to the jail. Before I booked her, I learned her family are caters. So, we worked out a deal.

“For her handling the details of the Christmas party for poor children, I let her go free.
